My treadmill desk was delivered a couple of days ago and I've used it every day since. It was Saturday to Thursday between ordering and delivery. The treadmill came packed in two large boxes, delivered via freight. They delivered it inside my front door. Some freight companies seem to deliver to 3 inches off the back of the truck and you have to cope, but this one had two guys, and just assumed I wanted it inside. They called the day before to arrange a 4 hours delivery window, and arrived a few minutes early, so I didn't have to wait around. The main treadmill section comes all assembled and is pretty heavy, like 150-175 pounds, but you can tilt it up on some wheels on the end, so moving it into places was not so hard after a couple cuts to the packing box (taking it up steps is likely a 2 person job). The packing was excellent, and mine came in flawless condition. It came with all the tools you require, although I found a real socket wrench worked better at really making the bolts tight. The top moved just a tiny bit before I properly tightened them. I also wondered for a bit if some bolts for the top were missing, but they where in the upright supports. It's surprisingly easy to walk a mile and expect I'll be up to a couple miles per day in a few weeks. I can surf the web (and similar click and view uses) up to about 1.5 MPH, and have to slow it down for more intensive typing. It goes from 0.4 to 4.0 MPH in 0.1 steps. It remembers your weight unless you totally power it off. It stops a little abruptly when you press pause, but starts at 0.4 MPH. You do have to always reset the speed after stopping, which has not proven such a big deal and probably is safer. Pressing the speed up button a dozen times (or just hold it down), to get back to 1.6 MPH has not been a big deal, although I suppose if you hopped on and off every 3 minutes it would be. The padded armrests in the front help a lot. There is a magnetic safety switch you can clip to your clothing and it shuts off if you get too far from the console. It took me about 10 seconds to clip the safety switch out of the way under the table. I did notice that desk surface height adjustment does NOT go real low. I'm 5'7", and the lowest height seems about right. If I were shorter, I might be unhappy. I also talked to LifeSpan and they said in a couple months to expect a new model with Bluetooth connectivity to record activity. The current model has what looks like a RS-232 connector for the console, and I plan on checking into accessing the data stream. The current model has no USB connectivity like some LifeSpan treadmills. Since I wear a BodyMedia calorie tracking armband, the Bluetooth data collection didn't seem worth waiting for. Long term, I might regret not having the Bluetooth data feed, but hacking the current console connector sounds like fun, assuming it's not some weird format and signal levels. The step counter works very well, and seems to count each side as a step, not once on both sides like my armband (so my BodyMedia armband reads half as many steps). I also measured power consumption, which was like 4 watts in standby (not moving but console active), and about 60 watts when moving at 2 MPH with me walking (I suppose it varies a bit with your weight, and I'm not a stick person). My modern efficient desktop computer + 24" lcd monitor consume about 60 watts. I pay about 0.25 per kilowatt/hour so if I use it 3 hours/day/365 days/year, that's about $15/year in active use electricity, and at 4 watts about $8/year in vampire power use when in standby. It also has a physical on/off switch at the front of the tread unit if 4 watts standby is annoying and you want to save the $8/year. DO buy or use some sort of mat under the treadmill as you are supposed to apply silicon lubricant every few months and it would be easy to damage an unprotected wood floor or carpet with the silicon liquid. The desk is VERY stable, after I really tightened the bolts tight (use a real wrench). It's great size, I have a small form factor PC, big monitor, keyboard and lots of space. I'm REALLY glad I didn't try to build something cheap, as even the 20" width belt I occasionally step to the edge of when I'm focused on the computer. The belt length is plenty long and I don't expect stepping off the back to be a problem at all. I also have noticed walking on a treadmill is a lot noisier than just sitting at a desk doing computer work, so am not sure how a treadmill desk would be received in an open office (mine is at home). The treadmill is mechanically pretty quiet, but your feet stepping on the belt are less so. I had been thinking about buying a treadmill desktop since I first read about them a few years ago. I recently moved, which presented a great opportunity to get one for my new home office. I researched a large number of treadmill and standing desks. I was looking for something that would not take up too much space, yet would still have plenty of space for a laptop, monitor, keyboard, mouse, phone, and some writing space. Since I have another sit-down desk in the office, I wasn't looking for anything dual use and wasn't interested in desks with hydraulics, etc.
I narrowed down my selection to either the TrekDesk Treadmill Deskor this one. Since I did not already have a treadmill, I went with the LifeSpan rather than the Trek. If you already own a treadmill, you may want to save money and go with the TrekDesk. I've never use or even seen the TrekDesk in person, so I can comment on how these two desks compare in terms of how sturdy they are, and they both have great reviews. I will say, though, that I really appreciate how the treadmill controls on the LifeSpan are mounted at the front of the desk. I seems like it would be annoying to have to try operating the treadmill on the TrekDesk by reaching over and behind/under the desk.
Because I was moving, but wanted to have the desk set up shortly after moving into my new place, I had it delivered to a relatives. The delivery company called in advance and helped move the large, heavy boxes into my relative's garage. In hindsight, I should have been more patient and ordered it after having moved into my new place. The boxes are large and heavy. It is best to have the space cleared out near where you'll be putting the desk and have the delivery guys carry them into your home/office for you. It is definitely a two-person job to move the boxes.
Assembling the desk was simple enough. I did it myself, but it would have been easier with two people. Some of the pieces are heavy. As for the treadmill, there is no assembly required. Just open one end of the box, roll it out and roll it under the desk. It is a little heavy and can be harder to roll on shag rugs, but it was still pretty easy to move it around on my own. It is always good to spray a little silicone lubricant under the belt of a new treadmill and you may want to adjust tension or center the belt, but I did none of that and there were no issues. I just rolled it under the desk, connected the vga cable to the desk, plugged it in and started using it.
I've now been using this desk for about three weeks and do nearly all of my work at this desk. I may take sit down break and take some phone calls or respond to e-mail on my phone, but if I'm using my laptop, I'm working at this desk. I've not felt the need to move my laptop to my wife's sit down desk or the kitchen table yet.
I concur with what many other reviewers have said about this desk, both the good and bad:
THE GOOD
* STURDY. I remain surprised at how sturdy this is. It isn't really connected to the treadmill, other than the vga cable that connects it to the control panel, so there is no vibration. Even if I lean on the desk, it doesn't shake. I do not currently have a monitor arm mounted to the desk, but I plan to eventually and the desk is sturdy enough that you can easily do so.
* SPACE. It is just the right size for me. I have my laptop, a monitor, a large Kinesis ergonomic keyboard, an external touchpad, a small wireless phone handset, a pencil cup, two drinks (water and coffee), and external hard-drive on my desk right now and still have space to put a notebook. Eventually, I'll mount both my monitor and laptop to raise them off the desk, freeing up even more space--but I don't really need it.
* CONTROLS. The treadmill control panel is a distinguishing feature of this desk. It is conveniently located at the front of the desk, but unobtrusive. It is very convenient for increasing/decreasing your speed or pausing the treadmill while you are working. Competing models that work with existing treadmills often require that you reach over and behind the desk to get at the controls, which can be inconvenience if you have a large monitor on your desk. Other reviewers have complained that you can't record your time, cals, steps, etc. offer time since it is reset every time you turn it off and there is no way to connect it to you computer to upload information. That was not a feature I needed or would even use, so lack of this feature doesn't detract my view of the device.
* MAINTENANCE. I have not had it long enough to say much about maintenance, but I've lubricated it and aligned the walking belt. Both are easy enough. Make sure you keep the Allen wrench that comes with the treadmill if you don't have a set already. You will need it to adjust the belt alignment or tension. You should really lubricate a new belt before use, so it would have been nice if they included some lubricant with the treadmill. It comes pre-lubricated, but depending upon how long it was in storage, it could dry up. I used it without prelubricating it without any issues for the first week or so and then bought some 100% silicone lubricant from Ace hardware. Just spray some under the belt every couple of weeks. Cleaning is easy enough, just vacuum any dust out of the motor every month or so. As another reviewer has pointed out, leaving the screws to the motor cover loose will make it easier to remove it for cleaning without having to pull it out from under the desk.
* HEIGHT. Unless you are exceptionally tall, you should be able to adjust it to the height that is optional to you. It is best to have two people adjust the desk height. I did it by myself, but it was awkward. It really is a set it once and leave it adjustment. If you need to frequently adjust the desk height for multiple users, this isn't the desk for you. You would likely need something more expensive, with hydraulics.
THE BAD
Really, there is nothing that is "bad" about this. A few small changes, however, would make this product even better:
* the on/off switch -- You can stop the treadmill from the control panel but can't turn it off. You either always leave it on, or you have to bend down at the front of the treadmill, under the desk to turn it off (and back on).
* beeping. I wish there was an easy way to silence the control panel so I can adjust the speed while on the phone without it beeping.
* abrupt stop. when you hit stop, it is very abrupt. I wish it would slow down first. I have to remember to step on the rail or off the treadmill before hitting stop
Those are the only negative I can think off.
Finally, as someone who has struggled with RSI in the past, some suggestions to make it more ergonomic:
1. Set the desk low so your elbows are at slightly less than a 90-degree angle and you shoulders are not hunched.
2. Raise your primary monitor to eye level using a monitor mount or a stack of books, whatever is in your budget. If you use a laptop, put it on a laptop stand, such as the Cricket laptop stands, which take up no additional space but rasie the screen up.
3. Use an ergonomic keyboard. Many are thicker than standard keyboards (I use a Kinesis Advantage, which is MUCH thicker) so you'll need your desk even lower to ensure you are not hunching shoulders or bending your wrists.
4. Use an ergonomic pointing device. Since getting this desk, I find I would rather use an external touchpad rather than a mouse. I used to use an Evoluent Verticle mouse, but it can not be comfortably switched from hand to hand and mice need more desk space than a pad. Also I can hold the touch bad in my hand and control the pointer standing back away from the computer while walking. The external touchpad, especially if you get a wireless one, give you a lot more range of movement, and just seems easier to use when walking. Your mileage may vary.
